Residential Garage Doors

Garage Door Types

Pan Door

Pan doors are not insulated. They offer virtually no R-value. Pan doors are a good choice for detached garages.  Insulation can be added to pan doors for minimal R-value and noise suppression.

Polystyrene Insulated Door

Polystyrene insulated garage doors are a three-layer door. Polystyrene insulation is bonded between two layers of steel providing a good R-value. These doors are a good choice for harsher climates (both cold and heat) as well as attached garages.

Polyurethane Insulated Door

Polyurethane insulated garage doors are also a three-layer door. However, these doors feature a “foam-in-place” insulation that entirely fills all voids between the two layers of steel. Polyurethane offers the highest R-value available. This is an excellent choice for attached garages, garages that are underneath rooms and harsh climates (both hot and cold).

Aluminum Rail and Stile Glass Doors

Aluminum rail and stile glass doors are not insulated. They offer virtually no R-value. Aluminum rail and stile glass doors are a good choice for detached garages or moderate climates with an attached garage.  They are a great choice if aesthetics are the main concern.

Return on Investment

ROI

If you are trying to add value to your home while staying within a strict budget, replacing your outdated garage door is a good way to do it.  A garage door is one of the first things a prospective buyer sees when they pull into the driveway. Psychologically, a high‑quality, attractive garage door gives the impression that the garage itself is superior. Since garages are often part of a home buying criteria, this is important.

What do I use to lubricate my garage door?

garage door lubricant, hinge

It’s a good idea to lubricate your garage door at least once a year with “garage door lubricant”. Garage Door Lubricant is specially formulated lubricant that provides a protective non-drying waterproof film, penetrates and loosens frozen parts, and is nonflammable. Apply the lube to each of the following areas of the door: hinges, rollers (bearings and shafts), springs and end bearings (located at each end of the spring shaft). Once the application is completed, open and close the door to distribute the lubricant.  Garage Door Lube can be purchased from Hi-Plains Door Systems.  Or contact us at 785-462-6352 to set up your yearly garage door inspection and we'll take care of it for you.

How do I check the balance of my garage door?

garage door balance, springs

Hi-Plains Door Systems recommends checking the balance of your door once a year. To do this, close the door and then pull the red disconnect rope on your garage door opener. After pulling the disconnect rope the door should stay on or close to the floor. Next, raise the door about half way open, the door should stay at that position. Finally, raise the door all the way to the open position, where the door should remain open.

If your door fails any of these tests, contact us at 785-462-6352 to schedule an adjustment.
